Kalonji Saterfield has over 18 years of experiencing working in the field of education at the K-12, community college and 4-year university level. He has been an employee of the Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD) for 14 years and currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies for Santa Ana College. As an instructor, he teaches transfer-level coursework that include Interpersonal Communication, Public Speaking, and Intercultural Communication.
In 2012 he created the Carl & Rose Memorial Scholarships Fund, which was named after his parents who both died of cancer. Since its formation, over $6,500 in scholarship money has been awarded to RSCCD students that have been affected by the illness.
Additionally, Kalonji spends time as a workshop facilitator and motivational speaker. Through his work with school districts and community-based organizations, he has presented to diverse populations including AVID & GATE students, future K-12 teachers, educators, churches, and non-profit organizations such as the Orange County Uplift Foundation. His message is aimed at raising awareness about the powerful role communication plays in obtaining success both inside and outside of the classroom.
Kalonji is a member of the California Teachers Association (CTA) and has been actively involved with the organization since 2004. He has served as student CTA chapter advisor at both Santiago Canyon College and Santa Ana College, two diverse community colleges located in Orange County. In this role he has assisted chapters in the participation and implementation of fundraising events, volunteer opportunities, and community service initiatives such as school supply drives, the Adopt a Family Program, and an annual “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader Night.” Additionally, he has been published twice in the National Education Association (NEA) Advisement Newsletter providing insight on how to develop and maintain active student NEA chapters at a community college.
He is also a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and its non-profit affiliate the Orange County Uplift Foundation (OCUF). Through his membership in these organizations he has helped execute several community service based programs/events such as Talent Hunt, the High School Essay Contest, and the Father’s Day Brunch & Scholarship ceremony. Along with that, Kalonji worked to establish and actualize the OCUF’s Career Matching Program. Through this program, undergraduate students from underserved communities participate in professional workshops, community service projects, and receive one-on-one mentorship from a current professional in their area of study.
Kalonji earned his Master’s Degree from CSU Fullerton in Mass Communications and an undergraduate degree in Organizational Communication from CSU Stanislaus. He has also been nominated numerous times by his students as Transfer Advocate of the Year and was selected by his peers as Classified Employee of the Year at both Santiago Canyon College (2011) and Santa Ana College (2016).
Whether facilitating a classroom discussion, delivering a keynote address, or leading a seminar, Kalonji’s message is delivered with passion and enthusiasm. He utilizes interaction techniques, engagement strategies, humor, and practical instruction to move, motivate, instruct, and inspire his audience towards academic, personal, and professional achievement.
